The passing of a loved one is a time that filled with much grief, anger, sadness, and disbelief. During this sad time, friends and family need to come together as one and work their way through the grieving process. While the grieving process runs a different course for each person, we find the best way to work through this difficult moment is through commemoration. Memorializing, or honoring your deceased loved one can help move you toward acceptance while showcasing the love you have for the newly departed.
Creating a Memorial
Creating a memorial for your loved one can be done in numerous ways. While many choose to memorialize a loved one during funeral services, others tend to do it at a time `that holds meaning to themselves and their family. There’s truly no ‘right’ way to create a memorial; it’s entirely up to you and your preferences. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can hold a memorial for your loved one:
- Host a party or annual retreat: Annual parties and retreats are very common ways to memorialize a loved one. This is a special way to both honor the deceased and reunite with family members you’re unable to see often.
- Create a memorial website: A memorial website is a wonderful way to encourage friends and family to share pictures, stories, etc., regarding their loved one. This website can include a message board for users to upload videos and pictures on for all to see.
- Make a remembrance plaque: A remembrance plaque is another great way to memorialize your loved one. Plaques can be placed in a meaningful area that represents the essence of your loved one, or it can be placed within your home or office so you can always look at it. Remembrance plaques can include a photo, poem, birth and death dates, or whatever you feel is appropriate in memorializing your loved one.
- A memorial bench: Whether it’s in your backyard, a park, or your loved one’s favorite spot to sit and relax, a memorial bench is a fantastic way to honor the memory of your loved one.
While these are all amazing examples of how to memorialize the recently deceased, there’s one way that outweighs them all–living! The best way you can possibly memorialize your loved one is by living your life to its fullest while carrying your loved one with you in your heart.
